about

Gathered together for one night in Fort Charles, Jamaica in 1987, the legendary names of Reggae along with some very special guests met for this musical event that would reverberate around the world. Originally aired on cable TV in 1988 as part of the "Cinemax Sessions" series, two generations of Reggae and music royalty took the stage in a performance that would make music history.

The focus is on Jamaican heritage artists and on the remembrances of Bob Marley, who died in 1981, and Peter Tosh, who was murdered in '86. Marley's spirit is evident throughout, from widow Rita Marley and the I-Threes' pulsating rendition of "Buffalo Soldier" to the politically oriented "Conscious Party" by son Ziggy Marley and his band, the Melody Makers. There's also the kinetic presence of the late great Bunny Wailer on "Rise and Shine" and his celebration of the Jamaican pulse, "Root Radics."

Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders wonderfully tackles songs by Marley and Tosh, Jamaican native Grace Jones looks and sounds radiantly beautiful with "My Jamaican Guy"; and the Neville Brothers with special guest Carlos Santana, are closer to a New Orleans-style rhythm blowout with the antiapartheid "My Blood In South Africa" and the raucous, bluesy "Ain't No Use,".

One of the greatest singers of all-time, Toots Hibbert is here for 2 tracks with his joyful rendition of "Take Me Home, Country Roads," and his classic track "5446 Was My Number". The hour-long show closes with one of reggae's most charismatic performers, Jimmy Cliff, offering "Hanging Fire" and "Love Me Love Me" before being joined by the entire cast for an ensemble rendition of "The Harder They Come."

The DVD is now again available with the audio from this legendary performance making its CD and digital debut on April 9 with a limited edition picture disc LP coming on May 7. A must have for crucial reggae music fans and collectors.
