The soundtrack to the1982 film documentary about the men and women who pioneered gospel music, "Say Amen Somebody" is joyful and moving, even lacking the visuals provided by the film. The film is focused on two of the movements pioneering gospel artists, Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey and Willie Mae Ford Smith, whose dynamic "song and sermon" approach to gospel set an almost impossible to duplicate performance standard.

The highly acclaimed film directed by George T. Nirenberg was recently re-released and restored. The father of gospel music, Thomas A. Dorsey became the focus of the film. Dorsey was a popular blues pianist and arranger who was best known as Ma Rainey's band leader until he took the blues and adapted it to sacred music. Nierenberg's other main character was Mother Willie Mae Ford Smith, one of gospel's pioneering female ministers and performers, and a mentor to younger singers.

This 20 track set (18 on CD) features some searing gospel testifying performances from Ford and Dorsey along with Mahalia Jackson, Zella Jackson Price, Delois Barrett Campbell and The O'Neal Twins.
